S/4HANA transformation scenarios

Depending on which S/4HANA deployment option you choose, there are two ways to approach the transformation: the Greenfield approach, which starts from scratch, or updating SAP ECC 6.0 as part of a Brownfield approach, which enables the transformation without re-implementation and without disrupting existing business processes.

The combined approach—a hybrid approach—allows you to select the best parts of the Greenfield and Brownfield approaches for your implementation roadmap. This approach is best suited for large companies with a complex ERP landscape (multiple SAP and legacy ERP systems) and large data volumes.

Below is a brief introduction to all three S/4HANA transformation approaches.

Greenfield

New Implementation

If a company chooses the Greenfield approach, it abandons its existing ERP system. This has the advantage of allowing the implementation of a new, unified system containing only the processes and data that are actually necessary.

If a company completely redefines its enterprise architecture, innovations can be integrated more easily and a wide range of functions can be achieved. In the aforementioned study, only 14 percent of all respondents chose this approach because it involves more effort.

When migrating to the cloud version of SAP S/4HANA, the Greenfield approach is the only valid approach, as the systems are completely replaced by a new SAP cloud solution/new client.

Brownfield

System conversion

The brownfield approach involves a system conversion. Existing business processes are adopted and optimized as needed.

Since most companies do not want to completely abandon their custom ERP system, the brownfield approach is the most popular migration path.

What to consider:
Business process transformation must still be part of the transformation process.
If this is not done, the innovations and solutions in the SAP standard will not be captured, and adoptions and, for example, the replacement of add-ons will not be possible. Many customers are therefore unable to take advantage of S/4HANA even though the technical conversion has already been completed.

To ensure a smooth transition, platform conversion tools are used to divide the transition into clear phases. These tools also ensure that legacy processes are rethought, so redundancies and complexity are not retained. The advantage over the greenfield approach is that the project time for the system conversion is shortened.

Hybrid

The hybrid approach and its landscape transformation are not a standalone transformation strategy. It is simply a method that large companies with complex system landscapes can use to prepare for transformation. In practice, this means cleaning up and consolidating databases to reduce the footprint before the change.

Companies can also combine multiple ERP systems from different vendors using this approach. Such simplification is also possible during the actual transformation. Whether this makes sense depends on the system landscape and the target system. In many cases, an enterprise architect works with all three approaches to achieve the best possible approach.

This approach offers the opportunity to accelerate your transition to S/4HANA with a finance-first approach through the rapid adoption of S/4HANA financial innovations or, in the case of large multi-ERP landscapes, with SAP Central Finance (CFIN).
